Enriching Second Language Acquisition for Emergent Bilinguals
Applied Digital Learning 2024-25
Origin Story: Once an EB Always an EB.
I was born in Illinois. I attended kindergarten and first grade in the states. I moved at the age of seven to Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, schooling is in Spanish with the exception of the one English course. When I began school, I was behind language wise. It was decided that I would take second grade course with the exception of Spanish were I would take the first semester with the first graders, then be ready for full fledge second grade within a semester. The emotional stress caused me to block this time period in my life. I remember not being able to communicate and seeing friends that had been together for years. This is a trauma, I want to avoid in the classroom.
My Why.
Needless to say, I survived! After high school, I moved to Texas to further my education. I wanted to be an architect because I wanted to design self-sustaining buildings that could weather natural disasters and economical for all. Eventually during my university time led me to my current degrees: Spanish as Modern Language and History, Pre-Law, both bachelor's degree. The idea was to become either an international lawyer or an immigration lawyer. I always wanted to help others have a better future.
The Career: Finding My Best Fit.
I found teaching by accident. I had volunteered at my mom's school for seven years. Every time, she would sneak in work for me to do. After mom showered me with compliments and boosted my ego, I decide to try it out. I received my alternative certification and began teaching at the same school as my mom. (Which she ditched me the following year). Cliche moment: I fell in love with teaching! Since then it has been glorious and perfect ever since; if you are in education you know that is stretching the truth. It has been absolutely amazing and I would do it all over again; but there are moments of challenges and growth. However, when you have former students and current students tell you how much they appreciate you, it makes the fight worth it.
Resume
I have been teaching for 10 years. My role throughout my career is that of a bilingual teacher. I have taught grades 3-6. I finished an alternative certification program, and learned through experience and research. I have been the bilingual lead at my campuses since I began teaching. I have mentored beginner teachers whom are doing better than I am. I wrote curriculum for Duncanville ISD in 2022-23 for general education and bilingual education. I have been the unofficial technology specialist where I led professional development for programs like Snap&Read, and Co:Writer.
