Enriching Second Language Acquisition for Emergent Bilinguals

Podcast AI in the Classroom
English Language Learners have challenges and obstacles that most students do not have. They do not have the means to converse at the same level as their peers in the English language, yet they are expected to be fluent within months. They are tested by the state to track their progress. Most classrooms do not have the time nor support to help ELLs succeed in learning academics yet alone language. In an effort to help those learning a second language, I have researched the use of AI as a tool to teach and develop second language acquisition.
AI can be used in multiple ways, as stated in the podcast with various functions. Whether it be through a non-risk practice opportunity or detailed feedback of one's writing. AI is readily available to help. Programs like ChatGPT and HelloTalk allow for the practice of real life conversations; while easing the tension and anxiety that comes from speaking with others. The constant fear of floundering in front of one's peers is removed through the practice with AI. ELLs are misplaced in their academic standings because they are not given the chance to showcase their knowledge in the language they know. ELLs suffer of not having the words to express themselves, not the lack of knowledge in a topic. By providing supports, scaffolding, and opportunities teachers can have AI facilitate the production of content. Finally, the need for personalized feedback allows students to adjust faster and learn quicker. AI provides those reviews to ensure students become self-reliant and can confidently share their work.
I hope this podcast and resource videos help teachers implement AI in the classroom quickly and with little effort. Teachers have several whirlwinds that plague our time and drain our energy. The material I have provided are fun minor changes with a grand impact. As an educator for ELLs, and one myself, I know the importance of having time to develop resources in both languages that support students. I always wished for an assistant to help me with creating a learning environment that gave students choices, I found it in AI hopefully you will as well.

Co:Writer approved accommodation for all ELLs regardless of language proficiency.
HelloTalk, although new with a need for better feedback; this program is a fun way for ELLs to practice speaking in a care free way.
