Blended Learning:
After reading the text blended: Using Innovation to Improve School., I started implementing several structural and resource based forms. My goal is to have a Flipped Classroom Model, or at least a variation of it. My innovation plan is finding methods to improve students translanguaging skills. (Translanguaging is the use of both native language and second language; meanwhile, bridging the concepts through vocabulary growth and awareness). Here is my trial by fire.
September 17:
I began recording lessons and guided practice for my students. This has been extremely beneficial.
I spend less time talking, repeating myself, and have more time for small groups.
The students feel confident about their work and can return to the video multiple times. They also can listen to what I am teaching without fear of missing notes or if they zone out they can get back on track.
My emergent bilingual students are still struggling, but I am looking up ways to implement more support.
September 25:
I removed my individual student desks and incorporated flexible seating. This promotes collaboration amongst the groups. Add on the rule of all + Google then me; has helped students rely on their ability to communicate efficiently with others. Now your partner is your lifeline. Next goal is to make each area a standard orientated zone. I want to have tables that focus on standards that the students struggle with. Similar to stations; for example, having a table for figurative language, author’s purpose, theme, and complex sentences. The activities will be there all week with various levels of difficulty. If selecting the tables becomes an issue, I can modify and use caddies with supplies.
October 1: ePortfolio for beginners. Today, my students began using Canvas for their ePortfolio. I created a template for the students to use and posted it on Google Classroom. I am currently working on guidelines, tutorials, and rubrics.
Oh Gemini! You busy?
They are excited and ready to learn! They already prefer to use online tools rather than pen and paper. Now, they have a one stop to showcase their 6th grade work. I am still working on the flexible seating with a purpose. At the same, I am looking into typing.com as an option for my students to use to translanguage.
Stay tune for more!
Sincerely,
Coralis Mollitor
