5313: Creating Significant Learning Environments

In this course, I learned about creating supports that promote the learning of learners. Through learning environments, philosophies, and planning, I can help learners grow their mind.


  • Learning Environments. I took time to reflect on the classroom culture I have in my own classes. I want my students to feel included and powerful when learning. As for improvements that can be made, I need to be more specific and bring in my learnings from other courses.

  • Learning Philosophy. First off, I lost my mind and didn't submit my assignment on time. I still don't know if I miss read, or my calendar math didn't math. Overall, I had a lot of fun with the creation of this project. The stress of giving information was taken away because I was late; thus, I took some time to pursue my creative side.

  • Align Outcomes, Assessment and Activities. I felt success with this assignment because it was straight forward and I used a lesson I was currently working on in my classroom. I do need to be more specific, again, with the assessment portion. For example, the essay or presentation should have detailed the following: The assignment needs to include a defined claim, two reason, and two pieces evidence, and counterclaim. The essay maintains coherence and order. Adding rubrics and exemplars would have benefitted my Three Columns Table.

  • Understanding by Design. I struggled in this assignment because a limited my focus on the TEK and not the overall idea of informational text. I will revisit my goals to match student needs beyond my classroom and grade level.


    I enjoyed revisiting my Growth Mindset Plan and see how I have faired. I am happy to know that I have more concepts to back-up my plans. I hope I get to revisit it again at the end of the program and see if changing my journaling style helps me develop a better environment.


Where do I stand at the end of the course?


I feel like I got 100% in learning. I have gained a deeper understanding of my district that has made lesson planning clearer. However, the grade I am expecting to end with is a B, because I struggle with expressing myself. I relied on the GroupMe for this course and two classmates when working on these assignments. The GroupMe is less active compared to other classes. I do not if everyone felt incredible confident and we did not share as we do in other classes, but I would have definitely benefited from this. My group and I were equally lost which kept us guessing if we were correct most of the time. Anyway, I am grateful for their help, even if I wish they would comment on my assignments. I'll get there!
